SAN PEDRO RAPARIAN NATIONAL CONSERVATION AREA
The conservation area, approximately 40 miles long and 3 to 5 miles
wide, runs along the San Pedro River and protects 58,000 acres of public
land. The San Pedro is one of the few perennial rivers of any size in
the southwest desert making it essential to the diverse vegetation and
wildlife along its banks. One of the most biologically diverse areas
in North America it is home to more than 350 species of birds, 82 species
of mammals and 45 species of reptiles and amphibians. Many recreational
opportunities are available including bird watching, hiking, horseback
riding, bicycling, picnicking and environmental education. Shooting
and trapping are prohibited and hunting is allowed only in designated
areas. Motor vehicles are restricted to designated roads but ample parking
is available at each crossing point. Arizona Highway 90 crosses the
area, seven miles east of Sierra Vista. The United States Bureau of
Land Management administers the San Pedro Riparian National Conservation
Area, for additional information call 520-458-3559.
